Background of the Study
The rapid advancement of artificial intelligence (AI) and natural language processing (NLP) has paved the way for innovative educational support systems. In Federal University Lafia, Nasarawa State, the design of an intelligent chatbot for academic advisory represents a significant step toward enhancing student support services. This chatbot is envisioned to provide personalized academic guidance, answer frequently asked questions, and assist students in navigating course selections and administrative procedures. By leveraging NLP, the chatbot can understand and respond to student inquiries in real time, simulating human-like interactions and providing accurate, context-sensitive advice (Chinwe, 2023). The integration of such a system is particularly important in large universities where high student-to-advisor ratios often result in delayed or insufficient support. The chatbot can process data from institutional databases, academic calendars, and course catalogs, offering tailored recommendations based on individual student profiles and academic histories (Oluwaseun, 2024). Furthermore, the system can learn from interactions over time, continuously improving its responses and broadening the scope of services it offers. The use of an intelligent chatbot not only enhances the efficiency of academic advisory services but also improves student satisfaction by providing immediate and accessible support. However, challenges such as ensuring data privacy, handling complex queries, and maintaining the accuracy of information remain. This study aims to design and implement an NLP-based intelligent chatbot, evaluate its performance in assisting students, and assess its impact on academic advisory outcomes in Federal University Lafia. By doing so, the research seeks to contribute to the modernization of student support systems in higher education.
Statement of the Problem
Despite the increasing need for timely academic advice, many students at Federal University Lafia experience delays and inconsistencies in receiving support due to high advisor-to-student ratios and the limitations of traditional communication channels (Ibrahim, 2023). The existing advisory system is often overwhelmed by the volume of inquiries, leading to long waiting times and suboptimal guidance. Although intelligent chatbots powered by NLP offer a promising solution to these challenges, their deployment in the university setting is still in its early stages. Current systems may struggle with understanding complex or context-specific queries, and there are concerns regarding data privacy and the accuracy of automated responses. Furthermore, integrating a chatbot into the existing administrative framework requires addressing technical challenges such as system interoperability and continuous updating of academic information. This study seeks to address these issues by developing an intelligent chatbot tailored for student academic advisory at Federal University Lafia. The research will evaluate the chatbot’s ability to provide accurate, personalized advice and measure its impact on reducing response times and improving student satisfaction. In doing so, the study aims to establish a robust framework for integrating AI-driven advisory systems into higher education institutions, thereby enhancing the overall quality of student support services (Udo, 2024).

To design an NLP-based intelligent chatbot for academic advisory.

To identify challenges in implementation and recommend strategies for integration.

How effectively does the chatbot understand and respond to student inquiries?

The research will offer insights into improving student support through AI-driven solutions, enhancing accessibility, and ensuring timely, accurate information. The findings will be valuable for educators and administrators seeking to modernize student services and optimize academic support mechanisms.
Scope and Limitations of the Study:
The study is limited to the design, implementation, and evaluation of an intelligent academic advisory chatbot at Federal University Lafia, Nasarawa State, and does not extend to other advisory systems or institutions.
